Underdamped modes in a hydrodynamically coupled microparticle system

چکیده
When micron-sized particles are trapped in a linear periodic array, for example, by using optical tweezers, they interact only through the hydrodynamic forces between them. This couples the motion of the spheres and it has been predicted that an extended system might behave as an elastic medium that could support underdamped propagating waves. In practice, these underdamped modes can be observed only with massive particles in very stiff traps and very low viscosity fluids. We have been able to realize these conditions by trapping water droplets in air. Even with a system of just two particles we were able to observe the coupled oscillatory motion predicted: underdamping of the symmetric (collective) mode and overdamping of the asymmetric (relative) mode. 5 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Anomalous vibrational dispersion in holographically trapped colloidal arrays.
Colloidal spheres localized in an array of harmonic wells form a thermally excited, viscously damped dynamical system capable of supporting propagating elastic waves. Experimentally realized with micrometer-scale polystyrene spheres localized in a line of holographic optical traps, the hydrodynamically coupled array's behavior is quantitatively explained by a model based on the Oseen superposit...
متن کاملAvalanches in strained amorphous solids: does inertia destroy critical behavior?
Simulations are used to determine the effect of inertia on athermal shear of amorphous two-dimensional solids. In the quasistatic limit, shear occurs through a series of rapid avalanches. The distribution of avalanches is analyzed using finite-size scaling with thousands to millions of disks. Inertia takes the system to a new underdamped universality class rather than driving the system away fr...
متن کاملCoherent Exciton Dynamics in the Presence of Underdamped Vibrations.
Recent ultrafast optical experiments show that excitons in large biological light-harvesting complexes are coupled to molecular vibration modes. These high-frequency vibrations will not only affect the optical response, but also drive the exciton transport. Here, using a model dimer system, the frequency of the underdamped vibration is shown to have a strong effect on the exciton dynamics such ...
متن کاملTerahertz underdamped vibrational motion governs protein-ligand binding in solution.
Low-frequency collective vibrational modes in proteins have been proposed as being responsible for efficiently directing biochemical reactions and biological energy transport. However, evidence of the existence of delocalized vibrational modes is scarce and proof of their involvement in biological function absent. Here we apply extremely sensitive femtosecond optical Kerr-effect spectroscopy to...
متن کاملReduced hierarchy equations of motion approach with Drude plus brownian spectral distribution: probing electron transfer processes by means of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy.
We theoretically investigate an electron transfer (ET) process in a dissipative environment by means of two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy. We extend the reduced hierarchy equations of motion approach to include both overdamped Drude and underdamped brownian modes. While the overdamped mode describes the inhomogeneity of a system in the slow modulation limit, the underdamped mode exp...
